RWAS HONOUR FOR DR WYNNE DAVIES - CEULAN


At the Annual General Meeting of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society (RWAS) held on the Showground, Builth Wells on 8th September 2021 Honorary Life Vice Presidency and the Society's Silver Medal were awarded to Dr Wynne Davies, M.B.E., Ceulan Stud, Miskin in recognition of his 73 years involvement with the Show.


Born in Ceredigion, Wynne studied at Ardwyn then Aber where he took a degree in Chemistry, and stayed on to do research for his PhD. He started teaching in the Rhondda , and then moved into further education, rising to become Head of Chemistry at UWIST


Dr Wynne competed at the first post-war Show held at Carmarthen in 1947 when he assisted his father show the stallion Dinarth What Ho, who won the championship for Welsh Mountain ponies, and there have been Ceulan ponies competing at every Show since and winners of many awards. Champion in 2015 was the stallion Ceulan Calon Lan, bred by Dr Wynne and sold to his helpers Rhydian and Bethan Donati of Groesfaen. To rapturous applause, Dr Wynne ran Calon Lan himself in front of the grandstand at the age of 83 years to claim the title of oldest Royal Welsh runner in the Show's 111 years history. Dr Wynne was also main-ring commentator for 40 years up to the RWAS Show held in 2019.
